The lack of safe and legal access to abortion can put women at risk physically and mentally.
Unsafe and Illegal abortion is a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide. It is estimated that nearly 25 million unsafe abortions take place annually.
As of June 2022, 64 countries have legalized or decriminalized abortion on request.
Women are sentenced up to 30 years in jail for having an abortion.
Access to safe abortion services is a human right. Under international human rights law, everyone has a right to life, a right to health, and a right to be free from violence, discrimination, and torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
The first strategy for preventing unsafe clandestine abortion is to reduce the incidence of unwanted pregnancy through measures such as improved access to effective contraception, post-abortion family planning counseling, health education campaigns aimed at promoting condom use among young people.

"I was blindfolded, without any pain-killing meds, the 'doctor' started opening my vaginal canal with a cold metal speculum, slowly but forcefully. It hurt. It was uncomfortable. After a while, I asked him to stop so I could catch my breath. He stopped for a couple minutes and then continued."
"I was visited by a young woman who knew me well and she said to me - I'm pregnant and I want to have an abortion. I told her, 'Unfortunately, here, we don't do that and it's illegal in Congo.'
